The origins of the Gretna Bergthaler Mennonite Church go back over one hundred years, when weekly services began to be held in 1891 in a school known as Gretna's MEI (Mennonite Education Institute). By 1901, regular Sunday school, worship services, Christian endeavour meetings and choir practices became part of the weekly schedule. On October 5, 1947, the Gretna Bergthaler Mennonite people organized into a local congregation instead of being known as a school church. The dedication of the existing building took place on December 21, 1958.
Our mission statement is as follows: "God calls us to be followers of Jesus Christ and by the power of the Holy Spirit to grow as communities of grace, joy and peace so that God's healing and hope flow through us to the world." We are a people who love the Lord and strive to be faithful to God's calling where we have been placed. We are a welcoming, intergenerational group of people from diverse backgrounds and occupations. We are connected to a larger grouping of churches called Mennonite Church Manitoba and to Mennonite Church Canada.
Our Sunday school for all ages begins at 9:30 a.m. Worship service follows at 10:45 a.m. We also meet weekly with our junior youth and moms' morning out programs. For further inquiries, call 204-327-5790.

Public Notice – Correction to Budget Presentation
The Municipality of Rhineland would like to inform taxpayers of the Local Urban District (LUD) of Gretna that an error occurred during the budget presentation at the public hearing held on March 18, 2026.
At that hearing, a mill rate of 21.294 was presented for the LUD of Gretna. This figure was incorrect due to a transcription error when transferring numbers from the financial plan by-law into the budget presentation. The correct mill rate, which was approved in the Municipality of Rhineland’s financial plan, is 20.294.
As a result of this error, the reported property tax impact for Gretna residents was overstated. The presented increase of 15.7% should have been 10.2%, which reflects the actual approved tax increase.
The total tax levy for the LUD of Gretna is $321,205. These funds support essential community services and core infrastructure, including sidewalks and streets; fire department capital and operating costs; the recycling depot; workshop operations; community beautification; snow clearing; street lighting; mowing; cemetery maintenance; community activities; recreation facilities (arena, ball diamond, and park building); drainage; and wages.
The Municipality of Rhineland in consultation with the LUD of Gretna Committee will continue to work at maintaining a competitive property tax rate while balancing the service needs and expectations of the community. Like many municipalities, we are experiencing inflationary pressures across most expenditure categories, which have contributed to this year’s increase. Council recognizes that property tax increases can be challenging and remains committed to using collected taxes to maintain and improve the community.
We sincerely apologize for any stress, confusion, or inconvenience this error may have caused Gretna residents. If you have questions about your individual property tax situation or the general budget, please contact the municipal office.
