About the Role:
The Municipality of Rhineland is seeking a dependable, detail-oriented GIS & Asset Management Technician to support municipal infrastructure, drainage, and asset records. This is a full-time field-based position with a municipal vehicle provided.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct field surveys of municipal assets, including signs, culverts, drainage features, buildings, and equipment
- Survey municipal ditches and document site conditions
- Prepare and submit drainage license applications
- Collect accurate GPS coordinates and measurements of infrastructure and other assets
- Take clear photos and complete digital survey forms using a tablet or mobile device
- Maintain accurate logs, maps, and asset records
- Follow daily field routes as per requirements provided by the Public Works Director
- Update and maintain GIS/Surveying/Drone equipment
- Communicate progress, findings, and issues to municipal management
- Represent the Municipality professionally
Qualifications:
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license
- Drone Operator’s License (preferred)
- Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Strong attention to detail and accurate record keeping
- Able to use smartphones/tablets and basic mapping/GPS apps/survey equipment/drone
- Willing and able to learn software programs
- Good communication skills and able to work independently and as part of a team
- Reliable, organized, and safety-conscious
Education and Experience:
- Experience with surveying, drainage work, GIS, or municipal field operations
- Preference will be given to applicants who have their CET or related designation or have work experience in a related capacity, including survey design, engineering and drafting
- Education and/or experience with creating maps, layers and shape files (QGIS preferred but not necessary)
- Education and/or experience with design/drafting software such as AutoCAD
- Knowledge of provincial drainage regulations and licensing processes
Unique Position Requirements:
- This position will coordinate the drainage program, survey, design, GIS, engineering review, and digital asset management functions for the Municipality
- The work requires the employee to exercise judgement, initiative and creativity while working under the framework of existing legislation, by-laws, policies and procedures
- The successful candidate must demonstrate an ability to work with a high degree of accuracy, tact and diplomacy and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, council, department staff and other external stakeholders
- The successful candidate may be required to make judgment calls that are within the established authority level of the position
- This position requires the completion of numerous projects and reports that are deadline-driven and relied upon by others
